Why Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Tires wear out unevenly. Your front tires’ outside edges will show more considerable wear, while the rear wheels wear down more evenly. That’s why if you don’t routinely rotate your tires, they will likely deteriorate at different rates, and you’ll have to buy an entire set of new tires sooner. Regularly rotating your tires when you’re supposed to will be kinder on your budget. More importantly, it will keep you safer when driving out to Billings, MT.

When to Rotate Tires

Do you want to know when to rotate tires, or how often should you rotate your tires? Front and rear-wheel drive Toyota models need their tires rotated about 5,000 to 7,500 miles, while all-wheel-drive vehicle tires should be rotated about 3,000-5,000 miles. AWD vehicles need their tires rotated more frequently because all four tires are actively engaged at once, which causes them to wear down faster. Always check your owner’s manual for specific automaker recommendations for your particular Toyota model.

Proper Tire Positions When Rotating Tires

  • FWD Tires: When you rotate the tires on FWD vehicles, move the front tires to the back of the car in the same left/right positions. But, when moving the rear tires up to the front, shift the right and left tire positions.
  • RWD Tires: When rotating RWD tires, do the opposite as above. Your rear tires should be carried forward in the same left and right positions. When you move the front tires to the rear, switch the left and right tire positions.

How to Rotate Tires

For DIY tire rotation around Laurel, MT, make sure you have a car jack and a lug nut wrench. Once you have all the tools you need, follow these simple steps to rotate your tires:

  1. First, set your parking brake as an extra safety precaution.
  2. Loosen all of the lug nuts on all of your wheels but don’t remove them yet.
  3. Using the car jack, lift one wheel and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Remove all of the tires on your Toyota and inflate them to the recommended PSI (written outside the tire). Once filled correctly, rotate your tires according to the instructions above for your kind of tires. Then, screw on the lug nuts by hand as much as possible.
  5. Lastly, lower your car from the jack stand and use the lug wrench to carefully tighten and secure all of the lug nuts on all of your tires. It’s a good idea to work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star-like design.
